Radish is an edible vegetable belonging to the genus Raphanus. This vegetable is grown worldwide. It is originated from Europe or Asia. However, they can grow well in moist soil. Moreover, folate, fiber, riboflavin and potassium compounds are present in it. All these are helpful for the growth and maintenance of human body. However, radishes are zesty, crispy and spicy in their raw form. They are very simple and easy vegetable to grow.  Most of the varieties of radish are grown all over the world. However radish is a root vegetable with its sweet taste. These vegetables can be eaten in raw form, canned and pickled. Furthermore, the binomial name of this root vegetable is Raphanus Sativus. They contain the compounds sulforaphane. However, this compound is helpful to reduce the risk breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Moreover, radishes are available all year around. Their peak growing season is spring and winter. As we all know that being a good source of phytonutrients, minerals and antioxidants; it provides most of the health benefits and beauty benefits.

Although it has so many good effects, yet it has been noted that like everything, there are some of the side effects of eating too much amount of this root vegetable. However, this article is about providing information about radish allergy symptoms. Allergic reactions are most of the common reactions that are occurring after eating radish.

Some of the common radish allergy symptoms are:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Asthma
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Changes in skin color
  • Angioedema

Furthermore, radish vegetable contains salicylate compounds that are beneficial as well as harmful.  In severe cases this radish allergy will lead to anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic shock requires immediate medical attention. Therefore, bed wetting is the most serious problem after eating radish, because this vegetable has a diuretic nature. That will lead to increase urination. However, the most common problem occurs after increased urination is dehydration.

When a cluster of allergic reactions occur in mouth then a syndrome occurs called as oral allergy syndrome and if it occurs after eating radish then it is called as radish oral allergy syndrome. The people who are allergic from pollen may have oral allergy syndrome. The immune system will not be able to differentiate between the food allergens and proteins and thus causing itching of the mouth, swelling of the lips and tingling of the tongue.

However, there is another chance of getting oral allergy, if a person is suffering from hay fever and experiencing some itching symptoms in the mouth then there are 95% chances of having oral allergy syndrome. This condition is also known as pollen food syndrome. However, the syndrome is caused by cross reacting allergens that are present in some vegetables and tree nuts. Oral allergy syndrome is not common in infants. Its onset is more common in older children and young adults.

Scratchy throat is the most common radish oral allergy syndrome. However, some of these symptoms also include itchy ears. Therefore, most of the oral allergy symptoms are confined to only mouth. Although the symptoms will subside consequently after the avoidance of the allergenic food yet it is not harmful. Most of the researchers have found that radish oral allergy symptoms may progress to systemic problems in about 9% of the patients. These radish oral allergy syndromes may cause anaphylaxis in 1.7% of the patients.

However, radish is a vegetable that is a rich source of vitamin C and vitamin B. Moreover, it contains dietary fiber, minerals and potassium. This vegetable has mild to pepper flavor. Along with its so many benefits, it may cause allergic symptoms and some other side effects like lowering of blood pressure and some of the time hypotension. The iron compound however, that is present in radish is helpful for treating anemia but if you are taking too much of iron than it is also harmful for your health.

Furthermore, there are so many ways of treating the allergic reactions. The best way of avoiding allergic symptoms is to avoid allergenic foods from diet. Goitrogen compound present in radish is very harmful for thyroid patients.

Diagnosis test is very important for radish allergy treatment. These diagnostic tests include skin prick test and some of the blood tests. Treatment includes:

  • Antihistamine drugs.
  • Try to avoid the use of combination of vegetables including pollen and grass allergens.
  • Some of the itching symptoms can be treated by the use of medicated lotions and creams.
  • The most important lotion for treating inflammation and itching of the skin is calamine lotion.
